National Flower for Palestine | Resilience | Heritage | The Fragility of Life
The poppy anemone are wild field flowers in Palestine, creating abundant carpets of red over the landscape during the spring months. The poppy symbolizes the relationship of exchange and reciprocity between the Palestinians’ life and the land of Palestine, where the peoples’ bodies give life to the land.
They were referred to by Jesus as the lilies of the field in His sermon on the mount, as they still grow wild near the Lake of Galilee. Among Palestinians it is often considered a symbol and memorial to martyrs due to its blood-red colour; the flower and its stem contains all four colours of the Palestinian flag, red, white, green and black.
Different regions of Palestine have adopted their own names for the flower; in the north, it is called Hannoun, Arabic for "passionate", and in the south, shakik, meaning “brother”.
