3 reasons why you should consider gifting floral home decor!
If you’ve ever received a piece of art as a gift, you’ll know just how much it can mean. There’s something about it that can really make you feel seen and thought of. And if you’ve ever gifted someone some art, you’ll know just how much thought went behind choosing out that piece. It’s not the same as candle shopping or picking out a book you know they’ll like. A piece of art is going up on their walls, they’re going to look at it every day, it has to go with their other decor and house vibes. I recently gave a friend a print and upon him opening it, I could not for the life of me wipe the ridiculous smile off my face. He said to me, ‘I think you’re more excited for me to open this than I am!’ and then he opened it and…well, tears happened so in my books, that’s a major gift giving win!
Here are three reasons why floral home decor makes a very thoughtful and powerful gift, especially for flower and garden lovers.
There is a scientific study that explains it!
In 2005, a 10 month study was conducted by a team of researchers at the University of Rutgers in which participants were studied when given flowers and the results concluded that the receiving of flowers is a powerful positive emotion inducer. It was concluded that the presence of flowers trigger happy emotions, heightens the feelings of life satisfaction and affects social behaviour in a positive way far beyond what was originally believed.
- Women who received flowers always elicited the Duchenne smile or true smile
- Women who received flowers reported more positive moods 3 days later
- Flowers presented to participants (both male and female) aged 55+ improved their episodic memory and elicited more positive moods
- The presence of flowers led to increased contact with family and friends
If this is the case with real flowers, one would have to think that the same would be true for printed images of them? Or at least, I am willing to believe that!
Floral home decor can be enjoyed forever without any care
Listen, I love receiving real flowers. Truly, nothing beats someone handing you a bouquet of blooms (should I even say that as I’m trying to sell you my art?) However, what is the one downside of them? They wilt and die. They don’t last forever. You know what does last forever and is reeeeally easy to take care of? I mean, you don’t have to have a green thumb, you don’t even need any sunlight or water? Floral home decor! Yeah, flowers printed on paper, forever flowers, flower art, whatever you want to call them, those last forever and ever and can be enjoyed for hundreds of years. They can even be handed down for generations, the gift that keeps on giving!
Flowers hold meaning and have symbolism attached to them
I would say most people have a favorite flower, or maybe more than one favorite? Although as I write this I’m realizing that I don’t think I do…Anyways, if you know someone who does have a favorite, then it’s a no brainer gift idea to give them a print of that flower! But there are also flowers that can remind people of loved ones in their lives. For example, lilacs will always remind me of my nana. She loved them. She lived for lilac season. If someone gave me a lilac print, there would be tears, and in my books, tears = a really great gift.
Each flower is also symbolic in another way. Some are spiritually symbolic, some have a certain meaning in different cultures and some hold symbolism from another time such as the Victorian era. Did you know that Victorians would communicate via flowers? It was called Floriography (the language of flowers) and it was a means of cryptological communication through the use or arrangement of flowers. For example, purple zinnias were a way of communicating thoughts of an absent friend. They were often given in a mixed bouquet of different coloured zinnias as a way of saying, ‘I’ve been thinking of you.’
Giving someone a floral art print can have a profound effect on the giftee. It’s such a special way of saying to them, I know you, I see you, I think about you, without using any words.
Whether you're shopping for a gift for an upcoming holiday like Mother's Day or just because, consider floral home decor! Heck, you might make your friend or loved one cry and as I said above, tears equal a really great gift.
