Endurance | Longevity | Grace
The Eastern Hemlock tree, nicknamed the ‘redwood of the east’, has the longest lifespan in the forest. It typically takes 250 to 300 years to reach full maturity and can live for as long as 800 years or more. It is native to eastern North America and grows from Lake Superior to Cape Breton Island. It thrives in the shaded understory provided by the forest, a condition most other trees would languish.
The bark of Hemlock is rich in tannins and was traditionally used in the tanning of hides during colonial America. The bark is also rich in Vitamin C and a tea can be made from it, should you ever find yourself lost in the woods and on the brink of scurvy.
