Patience | Good fortune | Birth flower for September | 20th wedding anniversary

Unlike most other varieties of asters, this one is an annual and is native to China.

It is said to mean patience, good fortune and a brilliant future.

The scientific name comes from the Greek word Callistephus, meaning beautiful crown.

In ancient Greek and Roman cultures, the burning of aster leaves was believed to scare away snakes and ward off evil spirits. The Romans associated them with Venus; their goddess of femininity, love, and beauty. The Greeks associated them with Astraea (hence the name, aster), their goddess of innocence and purity.

Purple asters are considered a royal colour and a symbol of wisdom, pink symbolizes love and kindness. Some consider asters to be the zodiac flower for Capricorns
