The name Eucalyptus comes from the greek words eu and kalyptos which mean well and covered. The tree offers protection in the form of shade and a canopy but also in a spiritual and medicine sense. The eucalyptus tree is sacred to the aboriginal community. They use the oils from the leaves to heal various ailments such as wounds and infections. Teas can be made from the leaves to fight fevers. 

The Indigenous peoples of Australia perform smoking ceremonies using eucalyptus leaves. A smoking ceremony is an ancient and sacred ritual often performed at rites of passage. The smoke is waved onto people present at the ceremony to cleanse them, as well as the location itself of bad spirits and to encourage good health. It is conducted not only as a way to cleanse and purify the body but also to connect to ancestors, Mother Earth and Country.
