Longevity | Hope | Resilience
The ginkgo has been a symbol of longevity and of a more profound endurance. It is also a symbol of hope, illustrated by the powerful fact that a ginkgo tree, known as the ‘bearer of hope’ survived the bombing in Hiroshima. This tree is regarded as a symbol of hope, and prayers for peace and healthfulness have been engraved into its bark.
The ginkgo tree can live for as long as 3,000 years. It is the lone surviving member of a long-extinct group of trees that existed before dinosaurs roamed the planet, between 245 and 66 million years ago. The species is referred to as a 'living fossil' because it is so old. Ginkgo leaf fossils from more than 200 million years ago have been found, and the leaves of the ginkgo tree today resemble them very closely. It is known as the survivor tree.
