Peace | Reconciliation | Goodwill
The symbolism of the olive branch dates back to Ancient Greece when there was a competition between Poseidon (God of the Sea) and Athena (Goddess of Wisdom). Poseidon struck his trident on a rock and a salty spring burst through symbolizing power. Athena did the same and an Olive tree immediately grew. The citizens chose the olive tree as it represented a food source, shade giver and fuel provider. From that moment on, their city was named Athens.
Winners of the ancient greek olympics would wear olive branch crowns as opposed to medals as they symbolized peace, unity and victory as opposed to material wealth.
In the biblical story of Noah's Ark, after 40 days and 40 nights, Noah released a dove. The dove returned with an olive branch signifying the flood was over and land was near. It became a symbol of hope and the promise of new beginnings. The phrase, to extend an olive branch, originates from this story and has become a metaphorical way to reconcile with someone and extend goodwill towards them and offer an olive branch as a peace offering.
