Renewal | New Beginnings | Self-love | Birth flower for December
Paperwhites are a type of narcissus. The name “Narcissus” is derived from the Greek mythological character Narcissus, a young man who fell in love with his own reflection. IIt is said that he wasn’t in love with anyone until he knelt by a body of water and caught his own reflection. The flowers are believed to be an incarnation of the man and are associated with self-love and vanity.
The paperwhite itself got its name from its delicate petals, described as thin as paper. In Victorian times, the gift of a narcissus meant you were “the only one.” A bouquet of paperwhites was a way to express pure or unconditional love.
Our custom of forcing paperwhites in a bowl of gravel filled with water is a Chinese custom. The Chinese name for the flower is shuixian, and translates as "water fairy”. Associated with Chinese new year and known to symbolize great happiness.
