Eternal Sleep | Remembrance | Hope

The poppy flower is most commonly associated with remembrance, symbolizing loss due to its growth in war-torn soil, a phenomenon noted since the Napoleonic Wars. The seeds can remain dormant in soil for years, but when they are disturbed, they will begin to blossom. This association was solidified by John McCrae's World War I poem "In Flanders Fields”, leading to the tradition of wearing poppies on Memorial Day and Remembrance Day to honour the fallen and also to represent hope for a peaceful future.

The ancient Greeks linked poppies with sleep due to their sedative sap, and they gave Demeter, the goddess of harvest, a poppy to help her sleep after her daughter, Persephone, was abducted by Hades, leading to poppies springing from Demeter’s footsteps. Poppies are associated with Morpheus, the god of dreams (inspiring the name morphine), as well as the deities Nyx (night), Hypnos (sleep), and Thanatos (death), who all wore crowns of poppies.

Victorians decorated tombstones with poppies representing eternal sleep.
